Hiking Merit Badge - Req. #6 - THE 20 MILE HIKE!

The boys planning and did their hike on Sept. 29th 2012.  An urban hike was planned this time starting at our house in Columbia Village and making a huge loop through Boise by way of the foothills and several parks.  They started at 9:30AM and finished exactly 12 hours later at 9:30PM.  Dad picked them up at the Overland Park Cinemas where the hike ended and the boys watched a movie.

Arches National Park - Utah - July 2012 (10 Miles)

We hiked all day in Arches National Park (Moab, UT) - over 10 miles and closer to 10 in over 100 degree July heat.

Hikers were Noel, Rory, Ewan, Dad, Grandpa Williams, Uncle Rick and Indiana cousins.

First hike - to Delicate Arch (4.5 miles)

Second hike - to Double O Arch (4.2 miles)

3rd hike - Landscape Arch (2 miles)

Canyonlands National Park - Utah - July 2012 (10 Miles)

We hiked from the parking area to the Needles - Chesler Park area.  Hike took approx. 6 hours in extreme heat.  Present were Noel, Rory, Ewan, Dad, Grandpa Williams, Nathan, Aaron, Ian, Luke, and Matthew.

Stack Rock Hike - Jan 2012

Noel, Liam, Rory, Ewan, Asher & Owen Larson, Jeff Kennedy. Hike was 15.5 miles as per GPS we brought along. We started at mile 12 trailhead up Bogus Basin Rd. The trail was extremely icy and snow-covered in parts. This was the day before the first big snowfall of the season. We hiked from 10:30am till 7:30pm and somehow still didn't make it to Stack Rock. People have told me about a different more direct route which we'll try in the summertime.

Hike #4 - Poison Creek, Owyhee Mountains, ID
We hiked 10 miles (according to the GPS) by going up and down into the canyon several times and up a couple of the different shoot canyons feeding into the main canyon. We hiked from 9AM to 4PM. Just Rory and Noel went on this one.

We did this during our Spring Break and started out at about 10AM, finishing at 6PM. We saw ducks, geese and swans along the way and also many beaver-chewed sticks and trees.
